Ahead of an upcoming EP dubbed We Want Connection, San Francisco-raised singer-songwriter Tracy Marcellino is marking the introduction of her new solo project, Witch Cabin, with an unorthodox yet refined debut single, “Lifelike.”
Named after Marcellino’s own cabin in the woods where she writes her music, Witch Cabin is the culmination of years of songwriting that ranged from underground cyphers to fronting several bands.
True to the project’s name, Marcellino is unafraid to challenge genre norms or any preconceived notions of who she is as an artist, with “Lifelike” blending folk sensibilities and electronic production.
The track utilizes surreal instrumentation that allows Marcellino to conjure up pop melodies, letting the more adventurous creative choices stand out. At first, the twinkly production and nebulous electronic flashes tease at the sort of song meant to engross and put listeners in a daze.
Instead, Marcellino arrives at an intersection of genres that makes it nearly impossible to pigeonhole her into one classification. Around the two-minute mark, “Lifelike” transforms into an all-out dance song where the mixing of sounds never feels forced or confusing in an abrasive manner.
If anything, “Lifelike” is a proof of concept for Witch Cabin and the project’s potential to push the needle forward in more ways than one. As for Marcellino, she proves her solo material is worth keeping an eye on.
