Since their 2020 debut, and the first time Grimy Goods covered their live show in 2021, Nation of Language has been one of the most consistent and fulfilling listens. Their new album, Dance Called Memory, released on September 19, 2025 (Subpop), is yet another velvety listen of pure synth splendor and easily one of the best new albums of 2025.

On Dance Called Memory, the Brooklyn trio continues to meld their beautiful brand of retro synth textures, kindled by the alluring vocals of frontman Ian Richard Devaney.

Dude’s voice seriously feels like a warm hug.

Songs like “Under The Water” are one of the most atmospheric and engrossing. Ian’s vocals carry a sense of sentimentality and longing, which makes the song all the more affecting. The way they arranged the music with Ian’s vocals is just so human. It’s the kind of song that warrants a good cry, a quiet anthem to enduring, it legit makes you feel. And that is very powerful.
