As part of a string of singles starting with last December’s “WAKE UP,” artists SIM and Zaia are showing why they were made for each other on the raucous new track, “SIMPLIFY !!”
SIM, a project that popped up about four years ago and has since committed to maintaining anonymity through its fantasy-inspired visuals and electronic-rock music. As for Zaia, an Atlanta native who similarly flourishes within the in-between areas of genres like hip-hop, funk, and trap, blurring the lines and letting the music speak for itself is nothing new.
At the very top of the song, the brooding bass and charged-up synths make for an apocalyptic-esque instrumental meant to induce riots. While the production recalls other artists like Genesis Owusu and Jean Dawson, the two artists make it their own with undeniably confrontational energy.
As if that weren’t enough, they know a thing or two about upping the ante through carefully timed build-up. By the second half, they fire off on all cylinders, embracing the post-punk chaos before settling into an uneasy calmness that feels more like impending doom in hibernation than a waving of the white flag.
Despite limited initial information about SIM or who is behind the multi-genre project, there’s no denying the work being put into the project.
Whether it’s the craft behind the music videos or the attention towards hellish yet captivating soundscapes that hypnotize you through headbang-worthy rhythms, the amount of care is on par and, in some cases, beyond artists with established brands and bigger audiences.
