Ahead of his upcoming album, Distracted, out April 3 via Brainfeeder, Thundercat attempts to woo his way into a girl’s heart on his latest single featuring Lil Yachty, “I Did This To Myself.”

Although it’s been six years since Thundercat’s previous album, It Is What It Is, the bassist extraordinaire is never far from the center of attention, whether it’s standing alongside A$AP Rocky on “Saturday Night Live” or appearing on “Yo Gabba Gabba!” But considering primary Distracted producer Greg Kurstin’s popstar resume (Adele, Paul McCartney, Beyoncé), he’s bound for a big year.

For Lil Yachty, his previous experimentation with psych-rock – a notable departure from his usual rap status quo – makes the collaboration with Thundercat natural. Even better, “I Did This To Myself” keeps both artists’ visions intact through the sheen production that takes Thundercat’s trademarks to an 11.

As per usual for Thundercat, the basslines are what drive “I Did This To Myself” forward, pushing the singer-songwriter into familiar vocal inflections that recall 2013’s Apocalypse and the ill-fated romance on 2017’s Drunk. Even when the song comes to a calm standstill towards the end, the track’s bounce will keep you moving long after repeated listens.

While Lil Yachty is no stranger to Thundercat’s world, he comes in with woozy bars complementing the stumbling romantic gestures in the previous verses. It’s a welcome addition that elaborates on the song’s awkward core, where the two slowly come to realize how exactly they’ve done this, as in their failing pursuits, to themselves.

If the rest of Thundercat’s collaborations on Distracted are anything like “I Did This To Myself,” safe to say there’s no reason to fear the results will be short of stellar.
