Although her new album, Ambiguous Desire, is out April 3 via Transgressive Records, Arlo Parks has an offering that will surely keep listeners at bay in the form of the aptly titled “Heaven.” Parks could have continued to ride the wave of her previous album, The Soft Machine. But the Mercury Prize and BRIT award-winner is showing she has no plans of stopping, something that’s apparent in her upcoming album’s energy, which you can only find on a sweaty night at a club.
“Heaven,” in particular, was inspired by Parks’ friend DJ Kelly Lee Owens, who took her to a rave under a bridge in LA. Like other British artists in recent memory, Parks finds herself working at a level where her penchant for crunchy drums and electronic music catapults what could have been a fun homage track into a reflection on not wanting the good times to end.
“‘Heaven’ is about euphoria, community and staying present,” said Parks. “Being in a room full of strangers sweating, connecting, losing and finding themselves is a kind of magic that’s beyond language. This song was my attempt at capturing that feeling.”
To put it simply, Parks captured that feeling. While the lyrics tackle the importance of being in the moment, the pace of “Heaven” is more akin to the in-between moments when you stop to think about where you are and how you got there. Smartly, the song loosens up in real time, becoming a more traditional electronic track than the calm meditation it opens as.
Of course, the fluttering beat has more than enough bounce to soundtrack a catwalk, with the softer electronic flourishes adding color to a song already laser-focused on standing out from the crowd of similarly inspired house tracks.
