In what appears to be a build-up for a new project, Lava La Rue puts their creative muscle to the test on the indie rock-tinged single, “Scratches.” The release is part of a slew of singles from the British singer-songwriter, who also dropped “JET LAGGED” featuring Foster The People in November of last year.
Although it’s been two years since the release of their debut album, STARFACE, the aftershocks La Rue left are still being felt. Their blending of genres and playing with narratives, whether within tracks or across an entire project, set them apart from a crowd of artists hoping to do what comes naturally to La Rue.
From the get-go, the slight distortion on the guitar puts you on edge, which adds to the disorienting quality of the vocals. True to the production at large, La Rue’s voice on “Scratches” is dynamic in a way that makes you listen closely, picking up on the reflective lyrics touching on feelings of self-doubt set against melodies that may or may not get stuck in your head.
Another strong suit of La Rue is their ability to make magic with any and every musician working today. The same is true for Foster The People on “JET LAGGED,” an unexpected collaboration that unites the two parties with a raucous electronic beat, bringing out the inner aughts fan in La Rue.
Whether or not these singles are building up to a bigger statement of an album from La Rue, it’s at least 100% clear that any time spent in the studio is bound to become another statement for the artist.
