After playing an 11-date sold-out tour, singer-songwriter Scout Willis is digging deeper into romance on the new single, “So Many Ways.”

The single is radio-ready in more ways than one. Produced by JT Daly (Benson Boone) and Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves), “So Many Ways” continues Willis’ exploration of all things love with lush instrumentation that was heard on last year’s “Blame Me” and “It Ain’t Nothing.”

However, “So Many Ways” approaches familiar topics with a sense of skepticism. When writing the song, Willis reflected on what it means to be vulnerable and devoted to someone else, as well as the risks that come with it.

“I’ve come to realize that my willingness to open my heart and risk disappointment is in direct proportion to how available I am to be delighted by love,” said Willis. “‘So Many Ways’ plays with this theme, exploring vulnerability, tenderness, and the many ways we can express love. It’s romantic and heartbreaking in equal measure, as many love affairs are.”

The strings and guitar at the start of “So Many Ways” swoop you up off your feet, immediately setting the tone for a romantic atmosphere defined by puppy love with a healthy dose of reluctance. As the lush instrumentation builds up across the runtime, Willis goes through hypotheticals of what she and a potential lover could do, leaving it up to them to make the next move.

While the track is firmly planted in modern pop conventions, leaving it at that would discount the seamless integration of multiple instruments and Willis’ ability to shift through decades past in search of her sound. She does so successfully, drawing on power pop and ‘70s singer-songwriters to create a track that is timeless for any hopeless romantic.
