Following the May release of “Conman,” Irish singer-songwriter Eiza Murphy is back again with another streamlined single, “This is Goodbye.” Written by Murphy and produced by her sister, Lenii, the track is all about her experiences of constantly moving and leaving people behind, unsure whether or not she will see them again in the near future. Rather smartly, it’s presented like a breakup song, making the core message all the more universal in a way that remains immensely personal.

Even with a somewhat sorrowful subject matter, “This is Goodbye” is made brighter by various instruments, including bursting horns and a subtle piano. Murphy sings with conviction while not deviating into melancholy territory, keeping within the perfected and traditional pop formula she has created for herself. Her voice brings the whole song together, containing a hint of soul for good measure, resulting in a dynamic performance on Murphy’s end.

As of late, she’s been writing for other artists like Alan Walker and working on her own solo music, such as her debut EP and “Conman.” Not unlike “This is Goodbye” in the sense that the two follow pop conventions reserved for the 2000s, it managed to pull an equally emotional punch with a shorter runtime.

In fact, none of the eight songs released so far since 2020 have exceeded three and a half minutes long. That’s not an indicator of Murphy’s musical quality, but it is an indicator of her consistency in producing concise songs that all deliver in their own right. From the outside, the process seems entirely organic, reflective of her experiences.

“Once I left Ireland and got over the first move, every goodbye after that became a lot easier,” said Murphy. “It sounds cut-throat, but it’s not meant to be. It’s about not fighting the inevitable and just letting it happen.” Since then, she’s been doing just that: letting things happen naturally and seemingly going with the flow to soaring results.
