Drewbyrd might only have a handful of singles out but his latest offering “one of one” (feat. PawPaw Rod) is just another reminder that this Los Angeles-based artist and producer should be on your radar. His sonically subdued dance tracks arrive layered with an alluring and energizing array of electro-textures and heady beats. With just four hypnotic tracks to his name he also recently performed his first Boiler Room show last month and a video of the euphoric set is slated for release sometime this month.
With his new single Drewbyrd invites rapper PawPaw Rod to throw some bars over his track’s suave melding of hyperkinetic beats and sleek intimacies. Opening with the rapid clamor of a drum machine that ebbs and flows throughout, “one of one” oscillates with a sensual and romantic intensity. “Sweep me off my feet / You know you got that touch,” they murmur against the track’s urgency.
On Instagram the artist mentioned there was a point when the song was up for grabs by other artists who wanted to use the song as their own — and it’s not hard to see or hear why. Luckily, Drewbyrd kept this one just for PawPaw Rod and themselves, serving up a track that is dually reminiscent of early ’00s lo-fi dance tracks but also wholly unique to his niche of entrancingly low-key melodies.
Drewbyrd started dropping his own music just this year, signaling his arrival with the immersive soundscapes and eddying electronica of “what you like.” He followed up that ecstatically irresistible single with two more equally mesmerizing releases: expanding his sonic palette into more melodically euphoric territories with “last girl,” while also revealing a love for creating dreamily amorous submergences like “cold truth.”
