Los Angeles post-punk outfit Agender is back with a feverish ode to brash femininity on their new song “Damaged Girls.” The band will also be making an appearance at this year’s Substance Festival at the Globe Theatre on Nov. 3rd. The single comes as the first piece of new music since the release of last year’s No Nostalgia — a satirically fiery take on modern life’s excessive absurdity. Now their back brandishing their inextinguishable rock bravado with a fittingly sizzling homage.

A scorching slow-burner, their latest track “Damaged Girls” opens with a gauntlet of simmering riffs and punchy percussion. From behind this pyroclastic flow of smoldering sonics comes the droning vocals of Romy Hoffman as they offer up a roll call of all the types of girls the song is dedicated to.

“Dissociative girls, dancing girls, demanding girls, daddy’s girls, dramatic girls,” she chants along to a jittery grind of guitars. Her words find themselves punctuated by collisions of emphatic bass and heavily trudging drums provided by Cristy Michel and Christy Greenwood.

But as the song continues it transforms from a moodily ruminating head-banger into a warped-out crescendo of ominous electronica. One that submerges its virulent rock beneath a mesmeric tide of heady synths — courtesy of both Hoffman and Sara Rivas — that edges the whole thing toward a dizzying mania.

“Damaged Girls” also includes a music video directed by Hoffman that offers up a rowdy montage of women unbound from any other conventions or expectations but their own. Like the song, the clips seek to reveal the impossible variety of femininity and the forms it takes. Capturing moments and snapshots — from a group of girls raging at a concert to shots of Marilyn Monroe’s and Joan Crawford’s stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — that embody such inspiring range.
