Whether it’s her love for all things gothic or her lower register vocals, a result of early health problems, West London singer-songwriter Gretel is a natural at blending electronic production and grunge rock, an aptitude exemplified on her most recent single and video, “Far Out.” Formerly known as Gretel Hänlyn and now simply Gretel, Maddy Henlein initially planned on studying physics; she soon pivoted to music, a lifelong passion that goes back to her upbringing listening to artists ranging from Nick Cave to Nick Drake.
However, it wasn’t until she was exposed to indie-rock band and fellow Londoners Wolf Alice that she realized songwriting was her true calling. Not long after her revelation, she jumped head first into her solo career, beginning with 2022’s Slugeye, an EP with eccentric, melancholy tracks such as “It’s The Future, Baby” and “Apple Juice.” The latter song took off, setting the stage for subsequent singles to further catapult Gretel for her distinct style and voice.
Produced by Mura Masa, who has worked closely with Gretel since Slugeye, “Far Out” is among her more pop-leaning singles to date, featuring a catchy chorus while staying true to her darker side. The fluttering guitar strings and subtle siren sound keep the song moving, rarely settling for a breather as Gretel keeps up with the change of pace. Gretel also takes the opportunity to showcase her dynamic voice, opting to sing in a higher register than her deep voice. It’s a welcomed change in an already standout track, proving there’s no possible way to box her into any one category or style of music.
Directed by Maisy Banks, the music video for “Far Out” takes a page or two from Sweet Charity, Bobby Fosse’s 1969 musical. In true Gretel style, the visuals are given a slight gothic paint job, appropriate for an artist who often ventures into the void of human emotions. Gretel herself provided creative direction and contributed to the choreography she performs in the video, dancing like a cross between one of Fosse’s Broadway dancers and a bat hanging from the ceiling.

Although Gretel has taken off in a relatively short time frame, she’s made a habit out of plunging herself into uncharted, creative territories. Just last year, she went on the road in the US for the first time with her second EP, Head of the Love Club, which included an LA stop at the Moroccan Lounge. While there’s no word on future US tour dates, the potential of a full-length debut is enough to spark excitement, with “Far Out” one of many milestones in a still-growing career.
