Following their album, Things You Feel, from last December, electro-pop duo Boys Holding Hands get intimate through soft synths and funk-inflicted basslines with “Lips.” The duo, composed of NYC singer Ken Orlino and Copenhagen producer Micki Borneland, formed Boys Holding Hands as an electronic project where the two could wear their hearts on their sleeves.
“Lips” is no different, taking EDM-inspired production and repurposing it into pop music that is more concerned with mending hearts rather than getting crowds of people on their feet.
Similar to their previous work, the single embodies intimacy from the guitar strings at the beginning to the electronic pulses heard throughout. As the song settles into a breezy groove, Orlino guides the song forward with gentle desire heard in his voice, cementing the feeling that “Lips” is meant for two.
However, while the song does start off like a lullaby, it eventually picks up in energy and strikes a balance between fluttering instruments and flourishes of funk. It’s a specific atmosphere the two have no trouble living up to, stretching a simple formula into a five-minute single that shows off their capabilities as a vocalist in Orlino’s case and as a producer in Borneland’s case.
