With more than 20 years of his solo career behind him, singer-songwriter Baxter Dury is finding new ways to challenge himself on the title track to his upcoming album, Allbarone, out Sept. 12 via Heavenly Recordings. The ninth album from Dury – which marks a new, electronic era for Dury brought about by his collaboration with producer Paul Epworth (Adele) – fully embraces electronica through dance beats and synths galore.
As a teaser for what’s to come, “Allbarone” encapsulates the spirit of what Dury and Epworth were chasing.
“I knew him a bit from a circle of mates, but only had had a beer or two with over the years,” Dury said. “He was sort of this mythological character, but he said he really wanted to work with me. Seeing us triggered something in him, he thought that he could produce music for me that would be more direct, more energetic.”
The single draws from different subgenres of electronic music and emerges with a track unbound by time. Whether it’s the deadpan delivery à la LCD Soundsystem on Dury’s part, the house beat driving “Allbarone” at points, or the instruments pulled straight from the 70s and 80s, there’s a feast of influences that all come together to carve out a corner of electronic music fitting for Dury’s style.
Considering Dury has a busy second half ahead of him, complete with the release of Allbarone and tour dates to boot, the first single starts matters off with an undeniable groove.
