Debby Friday, one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists in the electronic sphere, is making her return known thanks to songs like “Alberta” off her newest album, The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, out via Sub Pop. In support of the album’s release, Debby has several tour dates lined up, including an LA show at The Moroccan Lounge on Nov. 7.
When Debby came onto the scene two years ago with her debut album, GOOD LUCK, it was only a matter of time before lightning would strike twice if the electric intensity of the project were anything to go by.
However, the Toronto singer-songwriter, while not lacking when it comes to club ragers, also used her sophomore album as an opportunity to show her range, with “Alberta” combining dreamy R&B and dancehall.
The song kicks off with a hypnotic bass layered atop distant vocals before transforming into traditional dancehall production that lets Debby show her ability to adapt no matter the sonic texture. At the same time, she takes the time to sing about times spent in Alberta, not being afraid to personalize the lyrics and target them to a specific person.
While the shift may catch some by surprise, considering past material like “Lipsync” and “1/17” were the sort of riot-inducing dance songs to kick off a function, “Alberta” serves a different function: proving Debby can get personal at a moment’s notice. When an artist can deliver both, that’s proof of their impending longevity.
See Debby Friday in LA at The Moroccan Lounge on Nov. 7.
