Hot off a signing with Atlantic Records, LA-based duo Haute & Freddy are already reaching goals they’ve set for themselves with their newest single, “Dance The Pain Away,” off their upcoming album, Big Disgrace, out March 10. The duo will perform a local show at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater in Highland Park on March 10.
Last year was an especially busy time for Michelle Buzz and Lance Shipp, the minds behind Haute & Freddy. They went on the road for their first headlining tour in North America, passing by LA at the Troubadour. Considering the two artists kicked things off in 2024, their sustained hype speaks to how they’re able to keep the ball rolling around their 18th-century carnival realm.
On “Dance The Pain Away,” their theatrics continue with glitzy synths and power-pop vocals that emulate their respective eras – in this case, the ‘80s and ‘70s, respectively – while showing off the duo’s ability to blend genres effortlessly. As for the song’s message, they’ve been dreaming of capturing this specific feeling for years.
“That bustling street, grime of the city, crowded dance floor, ready to forget the world kind of feeling,” said the duo. “It was everything we were feeling, all the overwhelmed emotions, the chaos of how life can feel, and at the same time, the ease of how it can all go away for a little while when you’re dancing.”
True to their intentions, “Dance The Pain Away” comes alive during the cathartic chorus, with the first half serving as the perfect runway for the energetic second half. However, throughout the runtime, it’s hard not to keep your feet steady, especially when the anthemic melodies make for the sort of song that gets people going on a live stage.
In some ways, the song feels as though it could have been ripped right out of the ‘80s. But Haute & Freddy make it their own by keeping their production unmistakably modern and injecting the track with a sense of eclectic glee.
