toro-y-moi

After creating “chillwave” albums with an R&B influence, Toro y Moi is back with a new album that really doesn’t stick too much to his usual sound theme. Taking inspiration from iconic bands like Big Star, Talking Heads and Todd Rundgren, Toro y Moi’s new album, What For? seems to revive the smooth rock sounds of the 70s and 80s. After listening to his song “Buffalo”, he may want to add Hall & Oates to that tasty grab bag of inspirations, because this song grooves with that 70s Hall & Oates swagger.

Featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra guitarist Ruban Nielson and multi-instrumentalist Julian Lynch, What For? still has that downtempo chill vibe aesthetic, but Toro Y Moi’s sound comes full circle with the addition of some very well played instruments. Hear it for youself on NPR where there the album in streaming in all its entirety before its April 7 release date!

Toro Y Moi will perform at Coachella in a couple weeks, and also has a Los Angeles date at the Fonda Theatre on April 16, along with a lot more tour dates on his schedule.
