The Alabama Shakes have built a reputation as stellar performers, and Friday at Coachella on the Outdoor Theatre, they more than lived up to that with a wicked sunset set.
Brittany Howard is a Jill-of-all-trades, her vocal prowess damn near unmatched and her guitar skills respectable. Their music was perfect for the time of day, the sunlight disappearing behind the palm trees as they got a few songs deep.
“We’re Alabama Shakes and it feels so nice and the vibe is so good now that the sun is setting,” Howard said early in the set.
“We feel your love and and now we’re going to give it back to you,” Howard said before launching into “You Ain’t Alone.”
The big surprise of the set was they didn’t perform their single “Hold On.” The crowd called for an encore that wouldn’t come.
