Young Fathers

It’s nights like last night that really get me excited about music and the future of music. The hip hop trio, Young Fathers, played to a sold out crowd at The Echo this last Friday night. I’m used to seeing shows with an MC or two pace the stage as they did their thing but that was not the case with Young Fathers. The fairly small stage at The Echo hardly contained the three MCs and their high energy theatrical performance. Every aspect of the set was deliberate and well planned. Every lyric, harmony, and dance moves were on point. By the time the trio went into their single, ‘Get Up’, the crowd was losing their mind.

Starting off the night was LA drummer/singer/all around badass, Liv Marsico, and her latest project, Liphemra. Liphemra was an appropriate fit for the night as the full band blasted through a set that at times felt influenced by Radiohead as well as the LA beat scene. This was the first time for me to see Liphemra and I look forward to hearing more from her.

Following Lipherma was Canadian electronic music artist, Mas Ysa. Behind a wall of synths, Mas Ysa’s set had an almost tribal-like feel to it that worked well for the night. Mas Ysa provided his own vocals, which reminded me a lot like Ninja Tune artist, Eskmo.
