Katerina Papachristou began the band Tango With Lions in 2007, amid the burgeoning indie rock scene in Greece. Now she’s an accomplished veteran, having put out her third LP, The Light, only a few weeks ago. Today Grimy Goods is lucky to debut the video for a single marked by a slow-burning swell of energy; watch “Proof of Desire” below.

The video was shot in a hotel room in the heart of Athens, over one night, by influential Greek filmmaker and musician Alexander Voulgaris aka The Boy. The concept behind the video was to depict the sense of futility and the escapism generated by confrontational thoughts on life and love.” – Kat Papachristou[/perfectpullquote]

The instrumentation on “Proof of Desire” is purposeful and sparse, just like the expressions reflected in the face of the protagonist in the video. Two guitars linger nearby while Papachristou’s voice adds to the deliberately paced melody. After two verses, the music seems to reach an impasse, as our story does too, with her realization that she hasn’t truly experienced all that life has to offer. The only way to break free from the confines of our own lives is to destroy our self-made comforts, no matter how hard it might be. Together, the music and film burst through this complacency, adding percussion and reverb as she sings about “leaving [her] home.” After all, home is only a place we construct in our minds, so why not tear it down and rebuild every once in a while?
