Premiere: Cassandra Violet delivers a cheerful “fuck you” in new video
Good times painting the town red or sparkles masked in sorrow? Cassandra Violet has released the video for her bubbly, soulful track “Drinking Song.” The song is infectiously delicious with a funky jazz vibe. Its nostalgic tone is full of “oooo’s” and ohhhhh’s” and plays the perfect soundtrack to Cassandra Violet’s questionable night out in L.A.
Is she having a good time?
“Drinking Song” sounds shimmering and happy, but it’s really the saddest song I’ve ever written, about a difficult time in my life full of darkness and heartache … ” shares Violet. The song was written about someone who used to be in my life, specifically a man. When it was time to make the video, I realized I didn’t want to cast someone as the main character and give away that power to a man. Mitski just released an album called “Be The Cowboy,” where she embodies this idea of an iconic Marlboro Man to reveal her innermost desires. I thought, what if I portray this person whose destructive behavior has made me so unhappy, as a form of catharsis?”
Directed by Lindsay Stidham and shot by Armando Ballesteros, the video shows Violet wandering drunkenly around Koreatown with her squad (her backup singers) in tow as they do what most Angelinos do on a drunken night in K-Town: karaoke. With lights flashing, it all seems like a fuzzy dream and eventually reveals Cassandra Violet’s loneliness.
“I wanted to purge myself of the demons that haunt me with this song and with this video. The sweetest, most cheerful “fuck you” you’ve ever heard.”
