Jessie Reyez has annihilated any possibility of a sophomore slump with the coming of her second album YESSIE, catch her live on tour starting this month with a date at The Hollywood Palladium on Monday, Oct. 24. On her latest collection the Toronto-based artist cranks up the dial on her merciless and gutting, openhearted lyricism. And out of that supercolossal well of emotion, she composes equally grandiose sonic soundscapes and virulent anthems.

Armed with an arsenal of relentless bars aimed directly at emotionally vampiric exes and the drain of fake friends is an unabashed contemplation on the anger Reyez feels when remembering past scars. “Oh, you wanna build now? Look who’s askin’ / Oh, you wanna link now? Look who’s laughin'” Reyez snaps amidst the ecstatic crescendos of album opener “Mood.” Later on, in the rhapsodic “Queen St. W,” she goes right for the throat of a cheating ex; while the stunning ballad and haunting swells of strings in “Mutual Friend” underscore the fact that Reyez’s ecstatic wails carry much of the album.

On tracks like the 90’s R&B throwback “Hittin” and slow-burner “Only One,” she steps out from behind her scars long enough to revel in the possibility of romance while also making it crystal clear what she needs from them. Then there’s the disco-infused “Tito’s,” which stands out on the album with its shimmering melodies and Reyez’s half-murmured, coyly-cooed lyrics. If you weren’t a fan of Reyez’s emphatic style and incisive music before after YESSIE you’ll find it hard to pull away from the breathless passion her songs are always so saturated with.
