Tommy-Lefroy-band

Tommy Lefroy is slated to open for Samia on their tour next month with a stop at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on Mar. 2 and to tide you over until then the duo has released a new single in the form of indie-rollicker “Worst Case Kid.” If this is your first time hearing about the songwriter/producer duo of Wynter Bethel and Tessa Mouzourakis and you also happen to be a fan of the kind of euphonious harmonies and grumbling rock of Boy Genius — you lucked out.

The two artists first converged on one another after Mouzourakis saw the trio play live, posting a cover online of one of their songs, which in turn lured Bethel in to ask about starting a band. Taking their name from the real-life inspiration for Jane Austen’s character Mr. Darcy (the “original 19th-century fuckboy,” a man named Thomas Langlois Lefroy), the duo used the tongue-in-cheek reference to question antiquated but still ingrained tropes like the ever-romanticized male heartbreaker.

But on their newest single “Worst Case Kid,” Tommy Lefroy hones in on the dismantling effects that “what ifs” have on one’s perspective on life and especially their relationships. “Dysphoria melts me when I get home,” they cry out in their piercing vocals against the jaunty rhythms of glowing guitars. With hints of pandemic uncertainty bleeding through (“I’m a worst case kid in a plague pit town”) the song is a deceptively anthemic but beautifully melancholic indie-rock track.

The new single follows the release of two other releases from last year: the quietly folk-lilting “Jericho Beach” and slow-burning, guitar-grumbling “Dog Eat Dog.” They also have a debut EP out titled Flight Risk, which features a collection of seven songs that served as the duo’s introduction to their knack for kinetic production (using recordings of the city or conversations to flesh out the moody atmospherics), sprawlingly intimate songwriting, and transfixing harmonies.
