Maeta continues to leave her indelible mark on modern R&B with the release of her lovelorn new EP When I Hear Your Name. The ever-rising artist also recently announced a string of 2023 tour dates that will include a stop at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on August 30th. Across the collection’s 13 tracks, the velvet-voiced songstress illuminates the cycle of desire, romance, and heartache dredged up at the sound of a particular lover’s name.
Produced by Skrillex, Kaytranada, and Mustard, the EP offers a sublime vision of the future of alt-R&B and Maeta as its herald. When I Hear Your Name envelops you almost immediately in the satiny-sonic intimacy that wafts from its blending of jazz instrumentals with eclectic pop sleekness. Opening track “Sexual Love” (feat. James Fauntleroy) floats its fervid passions atop what begins as a haunting distortion of electronic tones and textures, eventually roiling in a crescendo of lust against singed riffs and sultry cymbal crashes.
Then there’s the undeniably groovy guitar that slices through “Cool Cat,” entangling itself with Maeta’s lambent cries. On “Control Freak” (feat. Ambré) she slows things down to dreamily muse on the kind of man who enthralls but also way too controlling: “Stuck in your ways / You can’t do me better than me, you my control freak.”
Maeta dips her feet into a pulsating dance track on “Questions” and soars into ecstasy on the electro-tinged “ASMR.” The EP latches onto memories of fiery passion as the embers of a still-gloaming love. As it nears its end title track and the refulgent ballad “Something Happens When I Hear Your Name” wrestles with the bittersweetness.
“‘When I Hear Your Name’ is a very personal project to me,” says Maeta. “We all have that someone, that when you hear their name, it just brings up a bunch of emotions and memories. This project takes you through the journey of my relationship and what I feel when I hear that person’s name.”
