Alaskan singer/songwriter Ava Earl has shared the lead single from her forthcoming album Too Much with the release of the spellbindingly openhearted “Jealous of Her.” The new record will mark her fourth studio album since her 2017 self-titled debut, which first introduced her as a creator of warmly poignant folk full of acoustic guitars and warbling strings. She followed it up with two more collections — Am I Me Yet? and The Roses — growing more delicate ravishing and fearlessly personal with every new release.

With “Jealous of Her” she delves into the complicated and messy feelings that boil out from under a wellspring of unrequited love. At its core, it’s a song about falling for someone who doesn’t just share your feelings but is also woefully indifferent to your existence. “Am I falling for a boy who can’t remember what I said? / Am I falling for a boy who has no space for me inside his pretty head?” she beams with heartwrenching clarity.

Against the mournful twang of riffs and glimmering strings, Earl wrangles with the pain of devoting themselves to someone who appears less than apathetic to their existence. One that causes the whole situation to transform into a competition of sorts. Driving her to yearn for their attention in less than healthy ways: like using someone to make the object of your fancy jealous.

Drawing on both intimate moments from her own life and a fictionalized version of those events, Earl’s songwriting is as enthralling as ever. “Jealous of Her” also signals a further shift toward more lyrical and sonorous rock and alt-folk influences. But her selfsame poetic lyricism still gloams from within them as the heart and soul of her music. If you haven’t yet dove into her absolutely enchanting discography now’s the time to catch up before her new record arrives!

“Women are often told or made to feel like we are too much,” Earl said of the album. “We are too much for our surroundings, too much for our peers, too much for our own good. We are supposed to wait our turn, couch our ideas in questions, and just be small. That’s never worked out for me. From a young age, I have been labeled ‘too much’ and I know from experience, I couldn’t be less if I tried. This album works through those feelings of being too much—both for others and sometimes for myself.”
