Richmond-based artist Benét has shared another track from his forthcoming debut album Can I go again? with the release of “Overpowering.” Creating an affectatious mix of soulfully sleek indie-pop, the luminously-voiced newcomer has already shared the record’s lead single in the form of the rollicking “Insensitive.” When it arrives the album promises to be a galvanizing response to heartbreak defined by their earnest devotion to personal growth.

Benét wanders through a murky retrospection on “Overpowering,” one that hones in on the effects of a badly-timed situationship. Against its light twittering of robust acoustics and ebullient beats, he vocalizes a desire to turn away from the rocky uncertainty of yearning for another’s affection whilst still struggling with their own self-love.

“I was working on a better me / Until you intervened,” he sings lucidly. “Now I bet you rest so peacefully / After ending me.” Benét funneling their frustrations with love’s contests and a desire to repair themselves just as quickly through the album’s videogame imagery: “Final level complete / Place is in the lead.”

Like their previous single “Insensitive,” Benét offers up an invigorating introspection within the dreamy tones and textures that pour from “Overpowering.” Wrestling with the wounds of heartbreak but also never letting go of that terribly fragile but critically indomitable spirit that keeps them plowing forward. “I’m telling you,” he sings against the song’s melodic swells. “My will to win / Is overpowering.”
