Katy J Pearson returns bearing ominous gifts just in time for Halloween with the release of her new single “Fire Leap” (feat. Drug Store Romeos, Wet Leg, Sarah Meth). The track arrives as the second offering from singer/songwriter’s forthcoming new EP Katy J Pearson & Friends Present Songs From The Wicker Man, out on October 31st. She also has two remaining U.K. tour dates that fans can catch her at for the year.
The new single is one of eight haunting covers that will pay homage to the 50th Anniversary of the 1973 British horror film “The Wicker Man” directed by Robin Hardy. Led by Pearson’s ghostly vocals — as well as the ethereal harmonies created by Sarah Meth Sarah Downie, Rhian Teasdale, Hester Chambers, and Evie Hilyer-Ziegler — the song materializes as a fittingly eerie ode to the iconic movie.
What starts out as a luminous chant eventually devolves into an unnerving web of breathy whispers and discordant strings. One that mingles its folk acoustics with a sinister atmosphere that transforms everything from its woodwinds to its violin into a foreboding melody. You’ll find yourself hopelessly enthralled by Pearson and company’s ability to elicit such an unnerving soundscape — just beware of listening to it alone at night.
With “Fire Leap” Pearson reveals a newfound niche in revitalizing the soundtracks of horror classics, her crystalline but otherworldly voice lends itself to the song’s unsettling production. This is exactly why she was asked to re-imagine the film’s soundtrack as part of the 5-disc The Wicker Man 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition in the first place.
Her last album actually featured a cover of Paul Giovanni’s “Willow’s Song,” a serendipitous coincidence that led her to be approached with the opportunity. With two covers of the music from the movie out it’s self-evident that Pearson was meant to spearhead this spooky project.
