With “Hearts, Beating Faster,” the four-piece rides a thin but captivating line between the song’s rousing emotionality and simmering melodics. It will enamor everyone from longtime Asi Fui followers to newcomers, as the track is a cornucopia of the band’s best bits, made all the more sublime by the addition of shimmering and soaring synths.

One led as usual by the gleaming vocals and buoyant bass of singer Tatiana Velazquez. Around her gilded cries is woven a glowing web of textures and tones, from the heady drums supplied by Ryan Reiff to the scintillating guitar work of Miguel Vasquez and Vince Mazza.

Guided by Velazquez’s potent lyricism, “Hearts, Beating Faster” seethes with the full heft of the band’s pensive passions. Growing toward a crescendo of percussive hammerings, shrieking electronics, and white-hot riffs that fuel the song’s ecstatic graspings for love and intimacy.

The new EP What’s the Best That Can Happen? will serve as the follow-up to last year’s Gold EP. Songs like “In A Daydream,” with its roiling beats and clamorous instrumentals, and “Hungry Ghost” upholding Asi Fui’s devotion to creating rock-rooted sonic journeys.

The latter also featured a fittingly spooky music video directed by Velazquez alongside Leti Gomez (Las Chicas Tristes), syncing its slow-burning and mystical intro to a mesmerizing series of visuals, including the strange but enthralling sight of three otherworldly creatures enjoying a charcuterie spread. It was also the sixth video that Velazquez conceptualized and directed — further establishing the band as talented multi-medium creators.
