The music of vivienne beaux arrives as a galvanizing collision of shoegaze atmospherics and punk urgency. As the vehicle through which musician Milo Chang Sigel explores and expresses his most visceral emotions, it’s also an inherently intimate project. One that draws on his many inspirations — from Title Fight and Deftones to Bon Iver — to create songs singular in sound and spark.

His newest single, “pretty face” is a compelling byproduct of the ardor with which he creates such palpitating music. But it also shows how he transcends pain and anger, turning those destructive and unwieldy feelings into something beautiful. In this way, he obscures the barriers between the laborious sensations at the center of his music and the hopefully magnetizing nature of what emerges.

For “pretty face” that meant confronting the corrosive emotions that linger after a break-up — made all the more vitriolic by an incident of infidelity. The result is a song that captures the furious bewilderment of such a reeling revelation. One that communicates vivienne beaux’s vociferous anguish via a wave of oscillating bass and drums. “How could you be so selfish to tear my heart into pieces?” he drones in lament.

If the song sounds exceptionally raw, it’s because he wrote it almost immediately after enduring such blindsiding heartbreak. Yet it’s also what makes it so fiercely honest — there’s no filter here for vivienne beaux’s gushing sorrows — only the frantic hysteria of a person scorned.

“I hope I crash and wrap my car around that pretty face,” he howls against the tidal clamor of brash sonics.
