Chelsea Wolfe is back with another preview of their forthcoming album She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, sharing the emotionally and sonically bewitching “Tunnel Lights.” She will also be heading out on tour next year in anticipation of the record’s release with a stop at The Novo in Los Angeles on March 30th. The new song joins the two previously released singles “Whispers In The Echo Chamber” and “Dusk.”
With “Tunnel Lights,” Wolfe enshrouds themselves in a murky darkness of atmospheric sound. As the song begins it resembles an eerie lullaby, their breathy vocals guided by the slowly distorted twinkle of piano keys. “I’m sanctified in my lover’s eyes,” she intones as a tidal wave of electric noise floods your ears with rapturous angst. Just before the tide subsides a ghostly transmission floats in: “Don’t try to forfeit / The way is through / On tunnel lights.”
Ultimately, the song attempts to shake you from delusional complacency and resignation. Forcing a confrontation with the notion that surviving one’s day-to-day life is not the same as living it. Signifying that elusive but entirely attainable freedom, Wolfe’s voice appears as a distant but not unreachable light within the cavernous soundscape that builds throughout the song.
“Tunnel Lights” is accompanied by a music video directed by George Gallardo Kattah and filmed amidst the wonderous beauty of the Colombian páramo. Its otherworldly visuals — from verdant mountainsides to its mystifyingly gorgeous flora — become the canvas upon which Wolfe projects the song’s dualities of isolation, grief, surrender, and ethereal liberation.
As they wander the rolling hills and forests they’re seen carrying with them on their trek an egg, one that serves as a representation of their transformative journey inward and outward. For Kattah the film serves as a “love letter” to both Colombia and his team, immersing you in the former’s lush tropical landscape with its soul-quieting scenery and foreboding architectural wonders.
