Your Future Ghost has dropped another new single in anticipation of their forthcoming debut album sharing the rowdy party anthem “PRITTY.” The project of duo Kate Voegele and Michael Grubbs, the track exudes an ecstatic and unbridled bravado that gets at the very heart of the raw synth-pop-rock they create together. Revealing a new facet of their sound first introduced by lead single “We’ve Got Places.”
When the album arrives it will find the pair behind Your Future Ghost serving up gleefully rampaging anthems. Their latest release “PRITTY” taps into that anxious eruption of emotion with a chaotic and enthralling mix of new wave, itchy punk, and frayed electro-pop. Through a gauntlet of whining synths and clamorous riffs Voegele saunters with delicious audaciousness.
At the center of the song’s wild-eyed rush of adrenaline and sultry swagger is a tongue-in-cheek lesson about tolerating another person’s unwieldy behavior. With Voegele taking the reigns and unapologetically assuming her messily captivating role with feverish delight. “A little flea in a web of destruction / You’re on your knees like a sinner in church,” she murmurs. “You’re begging please could you just give me something / A little blessing to go with the curse.”
“PRITTY” is about being a little unhinged but also irresistible,” Voegele explained. “You’re self-aware enough to know you’re kind of a mess, but you’re also not sorry about it because you’re a goddamned blast to have around. It’s kind of about just knowing that the weirdest thing about you is probably also the coolest thing about you, and not being afraid to celebrate that even if it makes some people mad or uncomfortable.”
Upping the tempo and showering themselves in blistering sonics the track is a radical switch-up from their first single “We’ve Got Places.” Yet both songs speak to the core ethos of Your Future Ghosts, which for both Voegele and Grubbs is to shine a light on the euphoric freedom that comes with being your unabashed self.
“I would like to encourage folks to accept themselves,” Grubbs shared. “Which isn’t easy. I’m like this sadboy emo dude and Kate is this singer-songwriter pop star, and together we’re making this dirty indie album because that’s who we’ve always really been inside.”
