The music of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Kate Bollinger possesses all the sublime clarity of folk with the added vibrancy of her multi-genre melodies. After releasing four transformative EPs she is prepping for the arrival of her debut LP Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind on September 27th via Ghostly International.
Growing up in Charlottesville, VA with a music therapist for a mother and two brothers in a band, Bollinger quickly discovered music as an ideal outlet. While still in high school she started recording the songs that would become her 2017 debut EP Key West.
One of Bollinger’s first singles “Dreams Before” remains enduring proof of her music’s gripping poignancy. Back then her tenderly ardent vocals beamed between the sparse, radiant twang of folk acoustics. Delivering earnestly vulnerable reckonings with snuffed-out hope.
She would go on to release six new songs in total through 2018. Teasing out colorful new facets of her music with breezy, guitar-driven duets (“I Wanna Be There”); dreamy bedroom lo-fi (“Water”), and beguiling art-pop (“Do U Go Out Together?”). Moving through Bollinger’s fledgling discography you start to get a sense of the effortlessness of her evolving sound.
The three EPS she’s released since then — I Don’t Wanna Lose (2019), A Word Becomes a Sound (2020), Look at It in the Light (2022) — resemble a gradient representation of that growth. Moving from spellbinding soft rock and melodically buoyant pop to mercurial alt-rock that shifts between all three.
“Any Day Now,” the lead single for Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, illuminates another ebullient direction for Bollinger’s music. Its breathlessly sweeping rhythms, the joyous urgency of its folk-rock instrumentals, the plucky sincerity elicited by its spirited rush — all of it unfurls with brisk and weightless excitement.
The dressed-up retro visuals of the single’s music video directed by Ambar Navarro and its ensuing absurdities (Bollinger driving a motorbike underwater with a dog in the sidecar being one of the best bits) further spotlight her talent for capturing a poignant whimsy through her music.
