beabadoobee shares a gently yearning message of homesickness in her new single “Coming Home,” the second song to be revealed from her forthcoming record This Is How Tomorrow Moves, out August 16th via Dirty Hit. She’s also added dates to her fall U.S. headlining tour and will now perform two nights at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 28th, and Sunday, September 29th.
“Coming Home” bears all the openhearted intimacy of the album’s lead single “Take A Bite,” except this time beabadoobee syncs her loving recall of familiar environs to a delicately gauzy, spellbinding melody. Guided by a soft tangle of strums and her glowing vocals, you’re given a tour of her home that touches on the ways nostalgia and longing can make you pine for peculiar things. From daily chores normally dreaded to otherwise ordinary moments that because of distance are imbued with an elusive but tangible emotion.
“You do the dishes, I’ll carry the load / To make up lost time / The trash to the brim and I’m scared of it,” she coos dreamily, words glimmering with a persistent pining. “But you always know just what to say / And I’m sorry, if I’m coming home too late.”
The song’s lyricism earnestly tries to articulate both the bittersweet melancholy and loneliness endured while on the road. While the ebb of its needful rhythm, made all the more beguiling by the call of a muted trumpet that wails in the background, lends “Coming Home” the feel of a heartwarming lullaby. One to be sung or remembered in those moments when the length of space between yourself and the people (and pets) you love is too much to bear — and you need a reminder that every departure is just a reunion in waiting.
“I wrote it in a hotel room in LA when I was away from my boyfriend, my loved ones, my two cats,” beabadoobee revealed. “It opens with all the little mundane things like doing the dishes, that I miss because I’m always away. Really, it’s just a cute little love song with a weird non-existent structure.”
This Is How Tomorrow Moves arrives on August 16th via Dirty Hit. You can see beabadoobee at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 28th, and Sunday, September 29th.
