With their new record Love Heart Cheat Code, out on June 28th via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune, just on the horizon, Hiatus Kaiyote shares one last preview of the next enthralling aurally visual world they’ve created with their new single “Cinnamon Temple.” The band is also currently on a North American summer tour supporting the album, followed by a series of solo shows by the group’s vocalist Nai Palm, including a stop at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles on July 24th.
At the forefront of “Cinnamon Temple” is the heavier sound that Hiatus Kaiyote has sought to embrace on the new Love Heart Cheat Code. Over a grinding and beguiling surge of riffs comes a tangle of shrieking rhythms and dizzying sonics. Creating a melody that is both discordant and momentous, it draws the listener closer to the roiling release found within.
Nai Palm said of the single: “It’s called ‘Cinnamon Temple’ because in Mali they have these mud brick mosques that look like they have cinnamon stuck in them. And because it was inspired by a Malian rhythm, there’s that element to it.”
The track unfolds as a maelstrom of emphatic sound and flowing mantras as Nai Palm lends her rapt cries to its ecstatic tapestry. Her words are a rhapsody of potent, humorous, and exultant affirmations. “Fuck it up buttercup / Be a visionary,” she intones over and over into the track’s funkily bristling melody. “Fire like a piranha / Killer Godzilla.”
Like previous singles “Telescope,” “Make Friends,” and “Everything’s Beautiful,” the final offering from Hiatus Kaiyote’s next record is one of buzzing, self-igniting positivity and cosmic gratitude. One that heartily taps into a new realm of heady psych-rock explosions and revolutions.
Love Heart Cheat Code arrives on June 28th via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune. You can see Hiatus Kaiyote live on their North American summer tour. Nai Palm will perform a solo set at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 24th.
