With her debut album, The Long Way Road, just around the corner (March 28 via Blue Note/Capitol), UK singer-songwriter Maya Delilah finds herself on a jazzy note laced with funk on “Squeeze.” “Squeeze,” in a strangely fitting hybrid of genres that answers the question, “What if Prince came up around the bedroom pop era,” relies on its strut-inducing bassline that keeps the track moving between sudden shocks from the keys. Delilah’s voice goes from emotion to emotion, at times falling into desperation and embracing impenetrable self-confidence in other moments.

The second half of “Squeeze” lets loose from its already tried and true formula, giving some of the spotlight to a spotty guitar that energizes the song with enough variability to keep listeners on their toes. At the same time, the drums stay consistent throughout, mostly sticking to a loop pattern as the other instruments twist and turn. Similarly, Delilah herself is consistent in her delivery and in her high quality, the likes of which tie everything together for what’s a more than exciting teaser of what’s to come.
