As one of the standout songs from her debut album, Big After I Die, out via Arts & Crafts, Toronto-raised singer-songwriter Charlie Houston eases listeners into the dreamt drift of “Lighter.” On “Lighter,” Houston sings about a love that scares her for how overwhelming it is yet is too good to pass up. While Houston is head over heels in the lyrics, the instrumentation is self-assured in its approach, eventually catching up to Houston’s emotionality during the chorus. That’s when the guitar, at first woozy in sound, becomes electrified through a healthy dose of reverb.
The song takes off once again during the climax, where the guitar finally gives up on holding back and lets loose the same way Houston does. In that moment, the lyrics and production match up, coming together in a cathartic release that speaks to how Houston is able to bring it all home.
