Starting off with the sound of a glitzy guitar and smooth bass, Mexican electronic group Midnight Generation takes after the 70s for their jam of a single “Don’t Wait Up.” While the very beginning doesn’t wait to kick matters off, the intensifying synths leading up to the song’s unexpected climax lift “Don’t Wait Up” to new heights early on. What could have easily been a fun homage to the disco era becomes a marriage between the genre and electronic music, not unlike the foundation of Daft Punk’s career.

However, to Midnight Generation’s credit, they lean towards disco throughout, letting the bursts of synths serve as pit stops for the track to get energized once again. The in-between moments are equally compelling, returning to the guitar-bass formula they teased at the start. Despite an early climactic moment, the last leg of “Don’t Wait Up” still stuns for the vocoder vocals that exemplify how the 70s are far from a bygone era. Watch the song in action.
