As if their 2025 couldn’t be any busier, Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C. are returning to their softer side, heard on Romance with their single, “It’s Amazing To Be Young.” According to guitarist Conor Deegan III, the song “was written in the presence of a newborn child – Carlos’ child. It sounded more like a lullaby or a music box then, but with the same lyric – ‘it’s amazing to be young.’” Indeed, the band takes that sentiment to heart, starting the track off with a lullaby twinkle before settling into a more laid-back temperament that doesn’t contradict their post-punk tendencies.
Like the fear and excitement of having a newborn, Grian Chatten’s vocals move between mature and woozy, encompassing all that comes with fatherhood. The instruments follow suit, gradually softening as though the weight of their reality is starting to become real to them. It’s a natural progression marked by a beautiful outro where synthetic strings return the single to its lullaby origins. Although Romance came out less than a year ago, Fontaines D.C. is already looking to the next step in their career.
