Literally and figuratively hot off of last year’s All Born Screaming, St. Vincent is keeping busy while in the midst of touring with “DOA,” a new song for and inspired by the new A24 movie, “Death of a Unicorn.” Unlike the alt-rock that was heard on her last LP, “DOA” turns to dark electronica, with 80s-inspired synths and bass that would sound right at home on the “Miami Vice” soundtrack.

But as the runtime progresses, St. Vincent finds ways to stretch the instruments to their breaking point. The synths, which intensify as the track goes on, roar out, seemingly bouncing off of another like they were bees in a swarm. The vocals similarly morph, echoing even further into the background as the production takes center stage.

While there’s no way anyone could deny St. Vincent’s talents as a songwriter, songs like “DOA” prove she’s just as impressive of a producer.
