Do you have the springtime blues? Do you yearn for something fun in your alternative playlist? If so, I have a suggestion for you. The next time Pom Poko, not to be confused with the 1994 Studio Ghibli movie, and Fake Dad are playing a show in your city, get a ticket and hang out for a subtle Nordic mosh pit and a few tall cans, alcoholic or water is fine—let loose for a little while!

This was my first time encountering both bands, and I was fortunate enough to see them live at The Echo for the last show of their two-week US tour.

Pom Poko lead vocalist Ragnhild Fangel said she wasn’t looking forward to returning home to the Norwegian cold. Still, she and the band, Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne (guitar), Ola Djupvik (drums), and Jonas Krøvel (bass), were highly thankful for the packed crowd and gave a killer show.

I have to give credit to the opening act, Fake Dad. This dream pop/ alternative LA duo, consisting of Andrea de Varona and Josh Ford, brought out the dramatics and kinetic energy, setting the tone for the night. They won the crowd over with “So Simple!,” a sexy Spanglish track, and Varona’s impromptu running through the crowd. Their performance was outstanding, and they gained many new fans with no problem! I’ve already added “Crybaby,” “Odyssey to Venice,” and “Fashion Girl” to my everyday playlist.

Now for the headliner, Pom Poko, I love their duality. Fangel’s voice is almost angelic, paired with the band’s hard-hitting punk/ ’90s grunge sound. I’m surprised that a bigger mosh didn’t happen when they bought out the cowbell for “Crazy Energy Night” or for songs like “If U Want Me 2 Stay” or “My Family.” These bands are the way to go if you need something to let off steam.

Both bands gained me as a new fan, and I’m happy I caught Pom Poko at their first-ever LA show before they become popular. I can’t wait to see them again.
