Newly formed Canadian trio Total Fucking Darkness, with four singles under their belt, are far from amateurs, with the three members – Torquil Campbell (Stars), Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and Tom McFall – having decades of experience behind. “Take It Easy,” the latest of their releases, puts their prowess on full display, bringing electronic and ambient music of the 90s, only to put it through an experimental meat grinder.

The glitchy sounds – supposedly made from sheep noises – and ominous synths complement vocalist Torquil Campbell’s hushed voice before the track enters a brief period of stillness defined by a gentle piano. Up until then, the ticking time bomb aspect of the song presumably built up to a big finisher. But the peace is short-lived, with the unpredictable production leaving listeners on edge for what’s to come. However, instead of allowing “Take It Easy” to explode in intensity, Total Fucking Darkness returns to the stillness, showing a level of discipline that promises more boundary-pushing work in the future.

“There are sheep involved in the track. It’s not the first song I’ve heard with sheep in it this year. If you think about it, songs with sheep in them are an incredibly good sign, because there’s never been a bad song that mentions, or actually features, sheep. Think about it.”
