Denver trio Barbara are asking themselves the big questions in life with their latest album, SO THIS IS LIVING, while showing off their synchrony with one another on songs like the title track. Contrary to their mononym name, Barbara always shows off the talents of members Camilla Vaitaitis, Bridget Hartman, and Anna Panella.

At the start of “so this is living,” Panella’s drums hypnotize, particularly due to the track’s jazzy approach to psychedelia. Similarly, the vocals echo throughout as though they were another texture calling from afar, like the bass underlining the pleasant yet eerie atmosphere on “so this is living.” The lyrics, which add to Barbara’s existential pondering by carrying with them a sense of dissatisfaction, compliment their instruments that float alongside one another.

But uniquely, the song’s second half is void of any vocals, allowing the band to jam out for the rest of the runtime. It’s a welcomed display that, in some ways, better communicates their intentions on “so this is living” and the rest of the album, proving how much they understand their psych-rock sound.
