Although still riding high on the strengths of their debut album, Brooklyn-based four-piece Model/Actriz is back two years later for more.

As the opening track to their sophomore album, Pirouette, “Vespers” comes in roaring with a newfound energy that contrasts Model/Actriz’s brooding demeanor. Given the group is working with the same production team who helped on Dogsbody, it’s no surprise that the song carries over that album’s strengths, whether it be the electronic production or incorporation of the band members’ instruments in unexpected pockets.

But the group takes their strengths and applies them elsewhere, with “Vespers” and the rest of the tracklist seeking to intimidate as much as it encourages dancing. For “Vespers,” in particular, the rapid-fire instrumental and gradually intensifying roars in the background juxtapose the soft vocals that go from sweet nothings to aggressive threats.

If there’s one thing the track exemplifies – which happens to be a long list – it’s Model/Actriz’s ability to capture such a specific atmosphere reflective of their sonic choices. In one moment, they could be leaning into darkwave. In another, they veer into eerie noise rock. They do all of that on “Vespers,” which speaks volumes for the rest of the album.
