After teasing new music earlier this year with the single, “V.I.S.,” Portugal. The Man show no signs of stopping their steady supply if their surprise EP, uLu Selects Vol #2, is anything to go by. Among the four new songs is “Silver Spoons” featuring Lucius, a bouncy takedown on the privileged. As the standout off the EP, the track finds the band letting loose and shedding any preconceived notions listeners might have from hits like “Feel It Still.”
From the outset, the melodies strike through the band’s balancing act between a brooding bassline and a pop-leaning detour into alt-rock during the chorus. The high-pitched register from the vocals especially sell the self-centered attitude at the core of the track’s message, where the narrator in “Silver Spoons” is “Sucking the titty of the city” and reminding themself that it’s “Hard to get along when you only think about yourself.”
Unlike the other songs from the EP with features, “Silver Spoons” is very much a Portugal. The Man track in its presentation and penchant for catchy rhythms. However, with the help of Lucius and the members’ own talents, they show how they can take a tried and true formula and go the extra mile of offering something new that old fans can still enjoy without fear of being alienated.
Contrary to the “I’m just an ordinary boy” lyric, Portugal. The Man shows they’re far from mundane, having delivered an EP where every song brings something new to the table.
