Samara Cyn is keeping the momentum going with her new EP, backroads. The rapper and singer just released her debut album, The Drive Home, last year, and now she’s back with a new offering. One of the five songs on backroads is “hardheaded,” a soothing track that’s equal parts spacey and bouncy in the best ways possible.
The emcee takes the shapeshifting production and matches its extravagance, letting her show off her pop music sensibilities that remind listeners why her popularity is gradually growing.
“‘backroads’ EP is a symbol for society’s comfort in everyday delusions,” said Cyn. “Our world is in dire need of unity and empathy…In the midst of questioning my own contribution and confronting personal delusions, I started to make ‘backroads’–a play on how we always seem to find a way around the issue instead of facing them head on.”
Compared to other songs on the EP that feature other artists like “pop n olive” and “brand new teeth,” the solo track finds Cyn taking center stage and reaffirming how versatile of an artist she is. The aforementioned production morphs from R&B to indie-rock to somewhere in between, fitting for Cyn, who is able to keep up with a self-assured flow on the catchy chorus while sliding in bars like carefully placed puzzle pieces.
While Cyn is keeping busy performing on the road with Smino, as well as some festival appearances lined up for the summer, “hardheaded” is further proof that there’s no stopping her steady workflow.
