Canadian singer-songwriter Mikayla Geier is hopelessly romantic yet losing faith in “piano in the sky.” Following her debut album, here we go again…, released in August of last year, Geier is striking while the iron is hot on her new single.

The ballerina-turned-singer has carved a corner of alt-pop for herself, distinguished by personal lyrics and grade-A music videos accompanying her songs, with “piano in the sky” being no different.

The track, which plays off the “pie-in-the-sky” phrase, finds Geier struggling through dating in the modern age. Unsurprisingly, the most striking aspect of “piano in the sky” is the songwriting. Geier explaining how “My friends all go ‘Just wait a bit / Just keep shopping for a shoe that fits’” is the sort of lyric that puts you into her mind, letting her situation play out like a romcom on top of pop-rocking production.

But where the song takes off on all fronts is during the chorus when the already bubbly instrumental gets an added boost thanks to shiny synths and an especially catchy melody from Geier. It’s the sort of thing that’s sure to get stuck in your head after one listen.

Whether or not more material is to come after this single, there’s no denying the first few lines of the chorus on “piano in the sky” are enough proof to show Geier’s talents, with the rest of the song a short and sweet jam for her growing catalog.
