From 3,445 miles away, indie-pop artist Min Taka reminisces about “Boston” on her latest EP, I think we should just move in together. Contrary to the Netherlands-based singer-songwriter’s previous material, most of which was sung in Turkish, “Boston” is sung in English – a considerable change that reflects Min Taka’s growing reach beyond the Netherlands or Turkey.

The muffled voices and gentle guitar strings set up the song’s nostalgic feeling, laying the groundwork for Min Taka to recount memories from 2019. At first, the references to the city and overall calmness in the instrumental make it seem as though “Boston” seeks to soothe through introspection. But after the minute mark, the single explodes with a fuzzy guitar and an especially catchy chorus.

After the unexpected detour, the rest of “Boston” becomes increasingly electrified, where Min Taka finds herself plagued by the past and unable to let go of what once was. By the second half, every aspect of the track fires off on all cylinders, whether it’s the thundering drums or fluttering vocals from Min Taka that go to show her understanding of what it takes to make a cathartic pop song.

Despite changes in language or approach, Min Taka keeps true to the honest brand of indie-pop that she established for herself earlier this decade. With that sort of flexibility, which doesn’t lose sight of what separates her from the crowd, it shouldn’t take much time before she gains an even bigger following at home and overseas.
