It doesn’t get much radio-friendly than Sports’ newest single, “If You Want Me,” the title track to their upcoming album of the same name. Two years after their last album, Get a Good Look, the Oklahoma duo is back, paving new roads for themselves in terms of inspirations that they smoothly integrate into their previously established sound.
Now, with a dedicated following thanks to songs like the funk-pop single “You Are the Right One” and 10 years of experience under their belts, the two are challenging themselves as contemporary acts catch up to their indie fusion of sounds.
“‘If You Want Me’ is about choosing love over control,” said the band. “It’s a plea to stop trying to mold someone into our idea of who they should be, and instead accept them exactly as they are. And also wanting the same in return. It’s a declaration of openness.”
True to the song’s message, Sports challenges preconceived notions of who they are as a group by breaking away from the glitzy indie rock that they came out of the gate with and embracing a danceable blend of pop and rock music.
By the time the chorus arrives, “If You Want Me” enters full-blown funk territory, complete with a shimmering guitar and smooth bass that complement the lyrics, which detail what it’s like to open yourself up romantically. Whether or not you have a history with Sports, it’s hard not to lose yourself in their music that they somehow make look easy at every turn.
