After dropping “Anything for You” back in May, singer-songwriter Irene Diaz is back with another love crooner, “The Fool.” Since she started her career in 2010, Diaz has shaped her discography around vintage soul sounds reminiscent of singers from the ’50s to ‘90s who you’ve likely heard blasting out of a lowrider.
“The Fool” is no different, bridging the gaps between her influences and arriving in a specialized state of mind that’s only concerned with surrendering yourself to love.
“‘The Fool’ brings the feeling that comes with being in love,” Irene Diaz said on her Instagram. “The slide guitar lures you into a dream. The haunting backing vocals carry you into the moment of obsession, it wells up, and before you know it, you are lifted into a spiral where only fools make real love.”
Similar to her description, the track lets the instrumentation at the beginning act as a black hole, drawing you in through its dusty, Mazzy Star-like sound before Diaz guides you out of the daze. The vocals, which could fit on a lost soul record from decades past, are just right for the song’s slow waltz, striking a chord for the clear sentimentality in Diaz’s voice.
Although “The Fool” accomplishes everything it sets out to do within the first two minutes, the last stretch of the song is dedicated to Diaz repeating “Fools only make real love.” The repetition combined with the ghostly backing vocals and swirling production ties a bow on “The Fool,” making it another win from this year alone.
