Although best known under his main alias, singer-songwriter Gus Dapperton is starting a new era under the name Loose Goose, having collaborated with English group Hard Life on “She Got The Funk” off shake your tailfeather vol. 1, out Sept. 19.

Recently, Gus unveiled the new project following a slew of singles with the announcement of a new EP. The change came as an attempt to rediscover his love for music after it had become too much of a career for him, prompting him to take a break from social media.

By starting fresh on songs like “She Got The Funk,” Gus can let loose through experimentation without the expectation of living up to previous singles. From the start of the track, abrasive mixing puts you on the edge of your seat before autotune-charged vocals guide listeners through electronic production that gradually builds.

Throughout the runtime, the instrumental evolves, never settling for a moment as various sonic textures are layered atop a pulsating beat. Given Dapperton’s ear for pop-leaning singles, it’s especially impressive how he’s able to push the envelope on the production front while keeping a radio-friendly rhythm.

Despite the wave of popularity that Gus has enjoyed for the better part of the past 10 years, the decision to start fresh reaffirms a need to keep listeners on their toes. At the same time, “She Got The Funk” aims to get listeners dancing on their feet, something that’s shaping up to be true for the rest of the EP.
