As the Oct. 3 release date of their upcoming album, Dumb Luck, draws near, Moon Panda has unveiled another spellbinding single, “Superstore.”
The four-piece band first started work on their latest track in the spring of 2023, recording it between San Diego and Denmark. The difference in recording spaces, a reminder of how their lineup spans countries, also serves as a reminder of how they finely tune each release.
While no stranger to the feeling, “We wanted to convey the comforting hypnosis of the song and hope you feel it,” said Moon Panda about the music video on Instagram. They manage to do just that and then some, blending elements from genres like trip-hop and dream pop before making the resulting sound all their own.
“Superstore,” similar to recent songs like “Butterknife,” finds lead vocalist Maddy Myers guiding listeners through the pulsating instruments that subtly intensify throughout the runtime. However, it’s the bridge and chorus where the band’s softer side comes out, the production shimmering and creating a spacey atmosphere.
Compared to past albums and singles, “Superstore” is proof that the rest of Dumb Luck is shaping up to be their strongest yet, where the band’s already pristine production is taken up a notch and aptitude for crafting pop-friendly indie tracks is as strong as ever. “Superstore,” in particular, sets the bar high for the rest of the album, embodying that hypnotic feeling the band was chasing.
